During the Covid -19 pandemic in 2020, articles on data science trends kept popping up on my social media pages (now I understand why). This intrigued me to read more about it, the tools, and the skill set needed to pursue a career in data science.
By this time, I had spent more than six months at home, as schools had closed. At the time, I was both a Geomatics Engineering and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) student. I always knew that I had a passion for coding. In a parallel universe, I would have pursued a degree in Computer Science or something along that line. Who said one cannot have more than one passion?
When desire meets action
The more I read about data science the more I wanted to understand its significance in my career and I was nothing short of impressed. I discovered that its applications were endless!
I remember taking a few free courses from online platforms that offer Data Science programs. This was before making up my mind to find an institution that would help keep me grounded and disciplined to pursue my newfound passion.
When my brother mentioned JENGA School during one of our conversations, I remember thinking to myself that I needed to find out more about it. I do not know if it’s just me but once something catches my attention, it keeps popping up everywhere around me.
On the same day, I happened to see a tweet, by my high school computer class classmate and I convinced myself, that it was the sign I needed from the universe to join JENGA School. Long story short, I got admitted into the School’s 3-month Foundations in Data Science program.
My JENGA story
My experience in the Foundations in Data Science class was quite unique. I say this especially because I went to a Kenyan public university and those of you that have been through the system know how harsh the experience can be. But this was not the case at JENGA School. My instructor (God bless you Dr. Albert!) was friendly, understanding, and well-versed in the content, yet somehow strict to ensure that we worked on our projects and assignments.
Interactions with our Teaching Assistant were great, and this allowed us to consult her whenever we needed clarifications of any kind on matters of classwork. My bond with my classmates was strengthened through the collaborative projects that we got to work on in the course. By the end of the program, I had made new friends and attended several Industry lectures in addition to acquiring basic data science skills.
My expectations had been exceeded. Upon completing the Foundations in Data Science Program I was more than happy to transition to the JENGA School’s 12-month Advanced Data Science program. Albeit a bit tougher and more demanding, my experience thus far has been exciting. I like the challenges that come with this program. I have become more self-driven and more passionate about integrating data science into my career.
I love that everyone around me is willing to help whenever I feel stuck or need further guidance. I am glad I joined JENGA School and I’m looking forward to the endless possibilities I can pursue with my newfound skills in Data Science. You can also build your skills and transform your career by enrolling in a program at JENGA School.
